Only ten minutes south of Interstate 80, Minden is conveniently located inside the Tri-City Area (Kearney - Grand Island - Hastings). This provides Minden with an ideal location if you want to get off the beaten path, but still have close access to big-city amenities. Only a short 20-50 minute drive will allow you to reach 3 cities between 25,000 and 45,000 which host many of the nation-wide chains that we all know and love. But even better than that, Minden can offer you that one-of-a-kind experience in our locally-owned shops and restaurants.
Minden is the county seat of Kearney County with a population of 2,964, but don't let the numbers fool you. Just because we're small-town doesn't mean we aren't world-class. Home to the world famous Harold Warp Pioneer Village, Minden has welcomed visitors from all across the globe.
Fully renovated in 2000, the Minden Opera House has also won the community much acclaim. Hosting acts from all corners of the United States, this beautiful facility also serves as the home of the Minden Community Players. Catch a show here and it will be a performance you won't forget.
And of course we can't forget the spectacular Christmas lights and the "Light of the World" Christmas pageant (for the full history, click "The Christmas Pageant" in the menu on the left). Make a visit to Minden in November or December and we guarantee you a light display that will rival anything you've ever seen.
Minden hosts a variety of annual events as well, so plan now to join us for one - or all - of these celebrations.
Cranefest takes place during the month of March, when the spectacular migration of the Sandhill cranes is in full swing. Many crane-themed activities take place during this festival including an art walk, contests, and a "Feathered Friends Finale."
MAADays (Manufacturing and Agriculture Appreciation Days) is a new event in 2009 and is held the first weekend of August. Join in the fun on the downtown square on Friday evening and during the day on Saturday. Activities include a tractor show, fun run, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, live entertainment, bed races, and much, much more.
In October plan to come to Minden for Bandfest. This parade of bands from all over the area always proves to be an exciting event. The parade is free and the field competition in the afternoon is a minimal fee. Great entertainment for little or no money!
